Spring 2015 Runway Trends: Fruit Salad

Spring 2015 Runway Trends: Fruit Salad via Aaryn West

There is no way to wrap up our review of Spring 2015 runway print trends without first serving up a healthy dose of fruit salad. This tasty trend has been around for some time now, and with all the examples found in recent runway collections, we predict it will remain on the menu for a good while longer. Keep your prints from feeling stale by combining your fruity conversationals with other trends like abstract textures, geometric elements or the Matisse collage look.

Spring 2015 Runway Trends: Wordsmith

Spring 2015 Runway Trends: Wordsmith via Aaryn West

Some might say that every print tells a story. While that might make an adequate metaphor in most cases, this particular trend displays a more literal interpretation. We found a noteworthy number of typographic prints parading down the runway in the Spring 2015 shows. This can be a tricky trend to tackle as every typeface and recognizable word will conjure a different feeling in your audience – much more so than a paisley or floral element. Our advice is to either distort your overall design just enough to prevent your written words from being fully discernible, or pick a simple word or short phrase to repeat that you think will be universally likable.

Kimbra – 90s Music

I heard Kimbra’s new song, 90s Music, on the radio the other week and recently decided to pull it up on Youtube for my listening pleasure. Oh, my god, Becky. I had no idea it would come with a bomb-diggity video filled with kitschy, neo-psychedelic, in-yo-face visuals. It’s filled with SUCH great inspiration for textile designers! It kind of reminds me of an updated version of Deee-Lite’s Groove Is In The Heart, which itself was a 90s throwback to the 70s. Kinda makes me wish I hadn’t thrown out my wide-leg Jnco jeans and Cross Colors gear. Below are some stills from the video but you should definitely take the time to check out the whole video here.

Resort 2015 Runway Trends: Butterfly Effect

Resort 2014 Trend: Butterfly Effect via Aaryn West

As both animal skins and novelty prints have been growing in popularity over the last few seasons, it makes perfect sense that butterflies would reemerge as a Resort print trend. Whether presented as small and cute, or enlarged and abstracted, the intricate and colorful patterns found inside of their wings can be stylized to work within a wide range of markets.
